For the past 5-6 years, along with our Pet ambulance services, Zobo Cabs have been feeding around 40 stray dogs in Shapoorji, Newtown. Among them is a sweet and playful mother dog named Pechi. Despite her friendly nature, Pechi has always been cautious of humans, keeping her distance and running away when approached.

A Life-Threatening Diagnosis

In June 2024, we noticed something alarming: Pechi was suffering from Canine Venereal Granuloma (CTVT), a sexually transmitted tumour affecting the reproductive system of dogs. While we started her on medications, it became clear she needed chemotherapy to survive. Catching her, however, was easier said than done. Despite numerous attempts over several weeks, Pechi eluded us, and her condition worsened.

The Heart-Wrenching Dilemma

As the tumour grew, we discovered another challenge: Pechi was pregnant. This left us with an impossible choice. Chemotherapy would save Pechi but endanger her unborn puppies. Without treatment, both Pechi and her puppies could face fatal complications during delivery. Time was running out, and we knew we had to act fast.

The First Rescue: A Diwali Miracle

On October 31, 2024, a determined rescuer named Shyamoli Di stepped in. After multiple attempts, she finally managed to catch Pechi. But being Diwali, all veterinary clinics were closed, and we couldn’t find a foster home. Taking responsibility, Mr Chatterjee, the owner of Zobo Cabs, brought Pechi to his house. A vet performed her surgery the next day, a delicate three-hour operation that saved her life.

A Shelter Setback

Post-surgery, we arranged for Pechi to stay at a nearby shelter for two months. However, due to the shelter’s negligence, Pechi escaped the very next day with bandages still on her body. Our team was devastated and launched a frantic search. Days passed with no sign of her, and we began to lose hope.

The Call That Changed Everything

Five days later, we received an unexpected call from a kind stranger. Pechi had been spotted near the Shapoorji flyover, her original territory. We rushed to the location and found her weak but alive. Once again, Shyamoli Di answered our call for help. She caught Pechi the following day and took her in to ensure she received proper care and chemotherapy.

A Happy Ending: Pechi’s Second Chance

After 45 days of dedicated treatment, Pechi fully recovered. She has returned to her home in Shapoorji, where she now plays happily with her daughter Whitey and her canine friends. Pechi’s journey from near death to recovery is a testament to the power of teamwork and compassion.

Gratitude and Acknowledgment

This incredible rescue wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless efforts of Shyamoli Di and her assistant Abhra. Their unwavering dedication saved not just Pechi but countless other strays in need. At Zobo Cabs, we are eternally grateful for their support and hope to continue making a difference in the lives of stray animals.
